Wonderland Cubicle

For Halloween last year I decided it was time to finally deck out my cubicle at work as Wonderland. The year before I had turned it into the Hufflepuff Common Room from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. And I've had Wonderland related things here and there over the years. But I've never actually tried to make the entire cubicle Wonderland-themed.

With it's eye-catching color and Mary Blair's wonderful use of patterns within whimsical shapes, I wanted to go with the Disney animated version of Wonderland. And I designated different sections of my cubicle as different scenes from the movie. I hand drew everything except Alice, which I cut from an old children's book because she happened to be the right size to fit the space I wanted to put her in, but nothing else I had on hand was quite large enough, so I had to make everything else myself from scrapbook paper, construction paper, and sharpies.

From my last post about Caiden's baby shower, I had a lot of other things going on, so I didn't quite get to finish the entire cubicle. Eventually I'd like to fill it out some more. But this is what I got through so far.

The side wall that faced the isle was set as the flower garden, where the "Golden Afternoon" was sung by the talking flowers. I happened to have green polka dot wrapping paper which I used as a background. It didn't quite cover the entire wall, so eventually I would like to make more leaves and flowers to cover the edges. But I started with the red rose, four of the pansies, the tiger lily, dandelion, and a couple bread and butterflies. I thought I drew a lot of leaves, ferns, and blades of grass, but by the time I spread them around the wall, there were quite a lot of empty spaces left. I think I could squeeze in the white rose, the rocking horse fly, and bunch more of the broad leaves and ferns.

The long shelf at the top of my cubicle I set as the Mad Hatter's tea party, with the surface of the shelf serving as the top of the table. More wrapping paper was used as the table cloth, also in polka dot pattern to tie in with the front wall, but multi-colored to go with the various cups and teapots that I cut as silhouette shapes that would stand up and give the space a kind of 3D layered look. Along the back wall of the shelf I drew various shaped chair backs against hedges and lanterns. This is where the printed image of Alice fit it, sitting at one end of the table like she had just come upon the party. On the other end I drew the Hatter and the March Hare.

Again, I thought I had cut quite a number of tea pots, but once I had them spread out, they didn't quite fill the space as much as I wanted. I'll have to make at least a dozen more, plus more cups, and maybe the "Unbirthday" cake and the Dormouse.

I don't have a photo, but the wall behind my monitors I started to turn into the Queen's garden. At the moment, it has a single rose tree with a few "painted roses" on it. Eventually I'd like to fill the wall with some hedges, card soldiers, flamingos, and hedgehogs. And an image of the Queen of Hearts herself.

I also have a stack of drawers on the left hand side of the long "Tea Party" shelf that I turned into the Rabbit Hole that Alice falls down. Again, I don't have a picture because it wasn't quite finished, but the beginnings of a background is there with a transition of dark blue at the top where it's dark, down to the bottom where Alice come out of the fireplace. The curving winding brickwork of the chimney is also in the background, but eventually I wanted to draw the floating furniture and knick knacks that Alice comes across as she falls down.

The final area of my cubicle was the space under the shelf that I was going to set as the woods where Alice becomes lost in. That section I didn't get started at all, but eventually I wanted to fill it with Nome Raths, the accordion owl, some umbrella vultures, "this way" and "that way" signs, and of course, the Cheshire Cat.

I'm considering making my own stencils to help further the rest of the project. That way I could also reuse them for adding to my Wonderland-themed craft room at home. Or other Wonderland projects that I'm sure will eventually force their way out of my brain in the future.
