So this diaper cake was the first one I created specifically for a dad.
When my coworker announced that he and his wife were pregnant with their second child, I immediately knew what theme his diaper cake should be. When I say that he is a Star Wars ® fanatic, I do not do his fanaticism credit. We had to limit his Star Wars ® references to a mere two a day. Yes, you read that correctly... two a day. He could weave Star Wars ® into his daily conversation the way a normal person simply breathes. We couldn't eliminate his quotes all together, since, as he says, he would probably implode. He has a room full of collectibles, several costumes, and he sees every movie on opening day religiously.
I'm not poking fun, I myself have a room dedicated to Alice in Wonderland, have dressed up as Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, and of course Alice. I carry Alice in Wonderland purses and collect Alice in Wonderland art. I thought I was Alice-crazy, but I have to bow down to a man whose obsession for Star Wars ® surpasses even mine for all things Alice.
So, yes, a Star Wars ® themed diaper cake was clearly obvious. But how to actually pull it off short of plastering the thing with iron-on patches or plastic action figures without looking like a yard sale was rather more elusive.
While I pondered this dilemma, I came across a BB-8 coin bank. It was a good size, light weight, and being a coin bank brought back all the childhood nostalgia of my own bank. As a kid, I had a silver teddy bear bank and I would push all my random coins and dollars from chores and gifts into it. It's metallic heaviness throwing off my estimates of how much money I had collected so far. The idea of my coworker's kid growing up and putting his cherished quarters into this BB-8 was too tempting to pass up.
Typically, I only use one found item as a topper and decorate the rest of the cake with ribbon and flowers. But I wanted more decorations to tie back to the theme.
If you're not familiar with Disney Tsum Tsums ®, check them out! They have all the charm of your favorite characters in an adorable shape that fits right in your hand. Since I discovered these little gems, I have given up most of the random sized plush toys I had collected over the years (obviously not my AIW ones). Seeing the growing number of these characters in my collection with their cute uniform shape has been utterly satisfying. And around the time I put together this cake, Star Wars ® had been acquired by Disney ®, and the first Star Wars Tsum Tsums ® were coming out!
Since I already had the BB-8, I wanted to grab the other two droids, R2D2 and C3PO. However, C3PO was sold out and I settled on a Storm Trooper since I wasn't sure what colors I was going to use in the cake.
I wasn't able to find any Star Wars ® ribbon at the craft store(s), though I was sure I had seen some before. So I found some clip art that I printed and cut out and attached to simple ribbon in R2D2-blue.
Then came the part I was dreading. I hit the floral section of the store and came away with some surprising choices. I had gathered a bunch of woodsy looking plants that somewhat reminded me of Endor. Spidery ferns and fuzzy buds in BB-8 orange, striated grass, and instead of flowers, tiny bloom-looking succulents. Looking back, I think some spongy moss and bits of bark would have been perfect additions, but overall I was pleased with how it came out. It wasn't my typical design, it missed the traditional flowers. But it still managed to be fun and even pretty. And most importantly of all, it impressed the most discerning of Star Wars ® fans, which was what I had been aiming for.
