Oh, Time... you creep along so slowly at times and then we blink and you've raced past us in a blur that leaves our heads spinning and asking, "where did you go?"
My last post was about my nephew's soon to be re-faced nursery mural. Well, this one is about a mural pulled way back from the past.
My aunt was having a baby... the timing of which I will reveal a bit later. She was a fan of classic Winnie the Pooh for the nursery and of course had a crib set with Pooh Bear and his friends rambling through the Hundred Acre Woods. It was green and earthy, with a beautiful sky of fluffy white clouds above them. When she approached me about painting the nursery to match, she wanted rolling green hills and blue skies and those billowing white clouds. She had wall stickers of Winnie and company, so all I needed to provide was their background. No problem, I thought. I was used to painting landscapes in high school, so this would be an easy project.
She bought paint to match colors from the crib set. And I went to her house after work to paint a mural in 3 days. This wasn't a mural on just one wall. This was a mural that wrapped around the entire room. She was having a party at her house and was hoping to have the nursery done in time for her guests to see it.
I don't remember why it came up last minute, but to this day I have never painted a mural as fast as I did this one. (In fact, my poor mother had to suffer an unfinished one in her bathroom for years because I never could get around to finishing it after I had moved out.) I even went so fast that at one point I bumped into the ladder I was using, knocking it and the paint tray sitting on it over and onto the one area of the floor that wasn't covered by one of the many tarps in the room. It made a stain on the brand new carpet that wouldn't completely come out. My aunt had told me not to worry about it, but of course I did.
In the end though, it was done. And it looked pretty cool.
I never managed to take a picture of the mural after she added that Silly Old Bear and his buddies. And to be honest, the last time I was at their house, I don't remember if the mural was still up or if it had been painted over. It was up for a while, long after Winnie had been taken down. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was painted over by now.
My cousin, Vanessa, for whom this nursery was painted, is turning 16 this year... crazy.
